Kesler ignites powerplay and Daniel nears record

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

The Vancouver Canucks may have had their 4 game win streak snapped in Colorado, but they wasted no time in getting back into the WIN column against Nashville. Sure they hit a rough patch in the second period when they allowed Nashville to take over the game throwing 19 shots at Luongo and eventually tying the game, but in the end the Canucks had the last laugh.

Luongo stopped 36 of 38 shots and Ryan Kesler scored TWO goals. Yes, it seems that Ryan Kesler has returned to his former #beastmode self that we all came to love to watch in the 2010-2011 season and that bodes VERY well for the playoffs.

St.Louis was a tough loss, but the Canucks will take the one point gained from extra time and move forward. It is highly likely these two teams could meet in the first round of the playoffs. Like the game in St.Louis, there will be great goal-tending displayed on both sides should this match come to fruition.

Things are getting interesting as games are being played with an almost playoff like intensity with April 30th right around the corner. There are teams fighting to get into the playoffs for the first time in years and teams that were expected to make the playoffs already eliminated. These next eleven days of the NHL season are going to go down to the wire before we know the final standings! Can you feel the growing intensity? I love this time of year in the hockey season!

Ryan Kesler has 6 points since returning the line up & will be looking to help the Canucks get back in the WIN column when they visit Dallas. With Kesler back in the line up the Canucks have also found something that they lost in his absence, their POWER PLAY and a MUCH improved penalty kill. They have scored 4 times with the man advantage as having #17 back has given the power play units MORE options. Ryan Kesler is hitting the net almost every time he shoots the puck and his healthy return has been a major boost to the line up. Since the trade deadline the Canucks have posted a 5-1-1 record.

Speaking of streaks and points can we all take a moment to look at Daniel Sedin’s stats for a minute? Following the Blues game, he sits at 756 points [TIED with Naslund & ONE point shy of becoming sole holder of the number TWO spot on the Canucks all-time points leader list behind his brother Henrik. Is not fitting that Daniel will have to opportunity to pass former Captain Markus Naslund’s record against the Dallas Stars [JUST LIKE HENRIK did in February!!]? Be on the look out for a #Sedinery filled game in Dallas when the team looks to help Daniel follow Henrik’s path in the Canucks history book, it’s going to be a very interesting game. The Sedins are truly special players and Canucks fans are lucky to get to cheer for them in Canuck colors, there is no duo quite like them in the NHL. [Combined over their careers, they have notched 1545 points –472 goals, 1073 assists! —>I should mention that 1248 of those points have come in their last combined 1194 games{since 2005/2006}!!!]

Rumor has it that the League is thinking of adding more outdoor games next season in what they are calling a ‘Stadium Series’. Do you like this idea or no they should limit to just the Winter Classic? Potentially one of the games would feature the Canucks and the Ottawa Senators playing a game at BC Place. I think it would be a great way for the league to win back some fans it lost due to this lockout debacle and possibly gain new fans. Plus more outdoor games means MORE fans get to share in the outdoor game experience!

Before signing off, I turn the opinions over to you. Are you excited about a ‘Stadium Series’ initiative by the NHL? Do you think it bring fans back? Are you counting down the days to the playoffs? Is there a team you hope that the Canucks are matched up against or team you really don’t want to see them face in the first round? Let me know your thoughts!

As always, until next time, nuck said.
