Have you been keeping up the free agency frenzy that has taken the NHL by storm the last few weeks? Were you surprised by the big money contracts or the big trades that happened? Were you as shocked as most of the Canuck fan base to learn that it was Cory Schneider who was traded?
I was not shocked as most by the move as it made the most logical sense given their contract discrepancies, however they should have acquired more than a high draft pick for everything that Schneids brings to the table. Best of luck in New Jersey Schneids, you’ll do insanely well behind Martin Brodeur! As for Luongo, the entire city & fan base owe him a HUGE apology for the appalling way they treated him during this whole ordeal. The Canucks will be very lucky to have his calibre in the net as the #1 once more when he returns [yes I think he will come back]. Back to you #LUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!
The free agency frenzy has hit the Canucks free agent list since July 5. The Canucks lost Maxim Lapierre[2 year contract worth $2.2 million] and Derek Roy[1 year contract-$4 million] to the St.Louis Blues. Andrew Ebbett signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As for pickups the Canucks signed defenceman Yannick Weber and forwards Brad Richardson and Mike Santorelli. Welcome to Canuck Nation! Fun facts: Santorelli grew up in BC & when he played in Florida his best season was where he scored 20+ goals was on a line with DAVID BOOTH who coincidentally is now a Canuck! No these were not big flashy moves by Gillis BUT as we all know cap space is limited and as the cap is going down next season, he HAD to be subtle.
Rumors are swirling that Mason Raymond has been signed by the Calgary Flames. These rumors quickly diffused by both his agent & the Calgary Flames that any such deal had been talked about or agreed upon. Raymond’s agent has stated that MORE than one team is interested in acquiring the winger but no contract has yet to be signed. Best of luck to Raymond wherever he ends up [I will miss using my favourite #everybodyLOVESRAYMOND when he’s officially gone].
Speaking of the Flames…their former franchise player Jarome Iginla has officially crossed over to the dark side by signed a 1-year contract[$6 million] with the Boston Bruins. Remember prior to the trade deadline when the media leaked information that he had signed with Boston BUT he had actually been traded to Pittsburgh? Well he chose to go to Boston for 6 million reasons this time! I do not understand how teams like Boston & Pittsburgh can keep signing players to long-term BIG money contracts…down the road those contracts may end up hurting their salary cap system.
Another captain to flew the only team he ever played for is Daniel Alfredsson who opted to sign a 1-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings rather than stick it out with Ottawa as he felt there is better chance for him to win a Stanley Cup in Detroit. Ottawa fans were shocked but had little time to fully embrace the shock as they acquired former Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan via trade later that same day!
Well its been official for awhile now, John Tortorella[Torts] is the Canucks head coach heading into next season. Success can be hard to come by in any career but as far as coaching goes, Torts has had success at every level he’s coached [winning an AHL championship, 2004 Stanley Cup, 2004 Jack Adams & 2010 Olympic Silver medal].
What are your thoughts? Has he made mistakes in his past? Yes, and he full on acknowledged his past tendency to make colorful comments AND that he knows he has to be different. I like the decision to hire Torts. I will not make any predictions until we see him coach some games & how the team plays in front of him throughout the year.
Pre-season will come quicker than people realize and we all finally get to see what TORTS as the coach of the Vancouver Canucks looks like! It’s going about to get very interesting for the team moving forward! Are you as eager as me for October to come so we can get back to watching BLUE & GREEN hit the ice? #isitOCTOBERyet
BONUS: I’m not too sure how many you have seen this gem created by some awesome Canucks fans in Vancouver, but here it is in case you missed it!:
A Canucks parody to the tune of Rhianna’s “Umbrella” comes: “Under John Tortorella”
As always, until next time, nuck said!
